GLOBECOM 2019 General Chair's Award

The GLOBECOM 2019 General Chair's Award is presented to an individual or team in industry in recognition of an exemplar service to humanity within the vicinity of the conference.

The GLOBECOM 2019 General Chair’s Award will be presented to John Komeiji and his team for the leadership in bringing Broadband access to under-served rural areas in Hawaii, fueling economic development, enabling residents to purchase goods that are not available locally and broadening business, healthcare and educational opportunities. Through John Komeiji’s leadership as President and General Manager, Hawaiian Telcom successfully won $18.2M in a 2018 Federal auction to enable rural areas in Hawaii with 1 Gb/s broadband service. Using optical fiber and other technologies, Hawaiian Telcom is the only local provider actively expanding broadband to underserved rural areas in Hawaii. Service will be provided to nearly 4,000 homes and businesses in rural Hawaii.

The GLOBECOM 2019 General Chair’s Award will be presented on 10 December 2019 at the beautiful Hilton Waikoloa Village resort on the Big Island of Hawaii.

John KomeijiJohn Komeiji, President and General Manager, Hawaiian Telcom

John Komeiji was named President and General Manager in July 2018, responsible for the overall leadership and management of Hawaiian Telcom’s operations and corporate staff.

Mr. Komeiji previously served as Chief Administrative Officer and General Counsel, responsible for the company’s day-to-day business operations. His Administrative Services organization included the External Affairs, Government Affairs, Human Resources, Information Technology Systems & Order Management Systems, Legal, Project Management & Delivery, and Support Services teams. He joined the company in July 2008.

Prior to joining Hawaiian Telcom, Mr. Komeiji served as senior partner at Watanabe Ing & Komeiji LLP. His practice focused on the litigation of complex commercial, personal injury and professional liability matters.

Mr. Komeiji earned a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa and a Juris Doctorate from Hastings College of Law.

Under Mr. Komeiji’s leadership, Hawaiian Telcom was honored as the 2019 Company Winner of Pacific Business News’ Titans of Technology Award. In 2018, the Hawaii Venture Capitalist Association honored Mr. Komeiji with the Corporate Entrepreneur of the Year award. Mr. Komeiji was presented the University of Hawaii Distinguished Alumni Award in 2011. A former Adjunct Professor of Law at the William S. Richardson School of Law, Mr. Komeiji taught Pretrial Litigation and received the Co-Adjunct Professor of the Year Award in 2002.

Mr. Komeiji is a past president of the Hawaii State Bar Association and has served on the American Bar Association’s Standing Committee on Lawyer Competence. A member of the prestigious American Board of Trial Advocates, he is also a Bencher and a member of the Executive Committee of the American Inns of Court, Aloha Chapter.

Mr. Komeiji serves on numerous non-profit boards including as Board Vice Chair for Hawaii Medical Service Association, and as President of The 200 Club. In the past, he served as Board Chair for the Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific and for the Boys and Girls Club of Hawaii.
