Travel Information

Waikoloa is located on the western shore on the Island of Hawaii, the youngest and largest of the Hawaiian Island chain. Nickname the “Big Island,” Hawaii is double the size of all of the other Hawaiian Islands combined.  From tropical rain forests to awesome volcanoes to snow cap mountains and of course to the magnificent beaches, the “Big Island” has it all.

Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport (KOA)

Located in West Hawaii at Keahole, Kona international airport is the primary airport on the Island of Hawaii. It serves both transpacific and interisland flights. To and from the Airport

IEEE has negotiated special shuttle rates for GLOBECOM attendees. To arrange for a shuttle service, please click here. Taxi services are also readily available at the airport. The average fair to the conference venue is US$50. Car sharing services such as Uber and Lyft are available as well.

Climate

Average temperature on the Big Island in December is 78° F (25.6° C). Daytime is generally sunny with the occasional possibility for a quick shower. The pacific trade winds will offer a welcome cooling effect. Nighttime can be chilly, so don’t forget to pack a lightweight jacket.

What to Pack

The dress code for GLOBECOM is business casual (dress shirts, polo shirts, khaki pants, suits are all acceptable). Don’t forget to pack sun screen, bathing suit, an umbrella, and a lightweight jacket.

Credit Card and Currency

All major credit cards such as American Express, MasterCard and Visa are accepted at most if not all establishments. The currency is US dollar. Banks and exchange bureaus are located in major shopping centers and airports to facilitate currency exchange.

Smoking

Smoking is not permitted in public places including beaches.

Time Difference

Hawaii is 10 hours behind GMT.
